Development planRoadmap
Veyl is in pre-alpha. This roadmap describes intended work, not a promise of delivery or a list of completed engine features.
01
Graphics Foundation
Establish a small Rust application that opens a native window and renders a navigable 3D scene.
Key objectives
- Complete cross-platform formatting, compilation, lint, and test checks in CI.
- Verify graphics runtime on Windows and Linux hardware before claiming support.
- Document graphics backends and hardware requirements as platforms are verified.
In progress02
Voxel World
Build the foundations for block data, chunk-based world storage, meshing, terrain generation, and streaming.
Key objectives
- Define block identifiers, properties, and coordinate conversion.
- Implement chunk storage and boundary-aware mesh generation.
- Explore deterministic terrain generation and background chunk streaming.
Planned03
Interactive Sandbox
Develop player movement and interaction concepts for exploring and changing a voxel world.
Key objectives
- Add player movement, gravity, and basic collision detection.
- Explore block selection, placement, and removal.
- Design versioned world persistence and basic visual improvements.
Planned04
Engine & Editor
Evolve the prototype toward reusable engine boundaries and developer-facing tools.
Key objectives
- Review subsystem boundaries and separate engine logic where justified.
- Explore debug visualization, profiling, and asset management.
- Design extensibility interfaces and document any public APIs.
Planned05
AI & Multiplayer
Research networking and autonomous entities as longer-term directions for the engine.
Key objectives
- Investigate networked world-state requirements and client-server approaches.
- Explore entity simulation and deterministic NPC behavior.
- Research bounded interfaces for external or AI-controlled agents.
